Indians dominate at Myrtle Beach By Roslyn Ryan
Apr 02, 2008 The Powhatan Indians returned home from Myrtle Beach, SC last weekend, after wrapping up the final game of the Mingo Bay Tournament. It may not have been the beach vacation some had hoped for – temperatures were in the low 40s during a few games and the coastal winds reportedly made for some chilly evenings—but the team made the best of things. After a whirlwind week during which the Indians played each day—no doubt a challenge for players used to two games a week at the most—the team came home victorious, champions of their bracket. Powhatan got off to a bit of a rocky start March 24 when they faced off against Conway, a tough AAAA team from South Carolina, but the Indians appeared to take the loss in stride. The next night against Johnsonville, another South Carolina team, the Indians Ethan Lewis (5-5 HR, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI) led the way to a dominating, 16-7 win. Powhatan second baseman Paul Nice was also a top performer against Johnsonville, going 4-5 with three RBI. Powhatan would never look back and managed to stretch the winning streak through four more games, all the way to the tournament final on Saturday where they took on the team from Martinsburg, West Virginia. The two teams were tied after the fifth inning, but after pairing some timely hits and a top-notch performance from Lewis on the mound (4 innings 1 hit with 9 Ks) Powhatan came away with the 3-2 win. “We went down there to play some good baseball and to improve our skills and I think we did just that,” said PHS head coach Gregg Conner.
Next up for the Indians will be their home opener this Thursday against Nottoway at Powhatan. Game time will be 6 p.m.
