Indians solid in scrimmage Published: September 01, 2010 By Greg Taylor The boys from Powhatan headed to southern Chesterfield County to take on an old Southside District foe in the Matoaca Warriors last Friday. The running game had a different look with the loss of Landen Bradley to Fork Union Military Academy. Both Ray Brown and Dion Berry rotated at tailback but it was Dustin Kingery who made the big play of the night with 62 yard touchdown to end the scrimmage. Second team quarterback Thomas Mitchell opened up the scoring with a 70 yard touchdown pass to junior Joe Manion who got past his man and outracing him to the end zone. As with any first scrimmage, there were several missed assignments and broken tackles but overall the first team did a solid job especially getting into the backfield to disrupt plays. The first team defense gave up two touchdowns; one on a long pass play and the other on a 10 yard run that was benefitted by Powhatan’s defense not being aligned properly. The Indians left the field with no major injuries and some work still to do in certain areas. They will look to improve their game when the travel to James River this Thursday for a 6:00 p.m. scrimmage before their season opener on September 10th at Midlothian. |
