The Lady Indians bounced back into the win column with a 6-5 victory over Park View in South Hill in a 10-inning thriller on Tuesday. Powhatan trailed the Dragons 5-1 going into the fifth inning when freshmen Courtney Wrenn and Katelyn Garrett and sophomore Kelsey Waugh had consecutive hits to jump start the Indian offense. Shannon Summers was safe on a Dragon error and Carly Davis followed with a 2 RBI single to knot the score at 5-all. Powhatan and Park View put runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh, but both teams came up with big defensive plays to put the game into extra innings. Neither team could produce much offense in the eight or ninth, but Powhatan finally crossed the plate in the top of the tenth when Wrenn reached first on a fielder’s choice, took second on a Garrett grounder, and scored on Waugh’s third hit of the day, a laser to the gap in right center. The Lady Indians defense retired the Dragons three up, three down in their half of the tenth to take the win. Jessica Glidewell, MacKenzie Dawson, Garrett, and Davis each had two hits for Powhatan. Davis contributed six assists, Glidewell five, and Summers recorded thirteen put-outs for the Lady Indian defense. Brooks started on the mound for Powhatan and was relieved in the first by Hovermale who went the final nine and two-third innings, scattering seven Dragon hits and striking out five.

Coach Marie Crump credited her team with a great comeback effort against the Dragons. “I thought we showed a lot of poise in rallying back and staying focused through the extra innings. This was a good team effort.”

Powhatan and Prince Edward engaged in a defensive duel on Thursday when the Eagles visited PHS, but Powhatan managed to push across the game’s lone run in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 win. The Powhatan defense played errorless and Freshman pitcher Jessica Brooks kept the Eagles at bay, scattering four hits and striking out 6 in the game. Prince Edward had runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but the Lady Indians managed several big defensive plays to escape with no damage. Powhatan threatened in the first, second, and fourth innings, but came up short each time. The Lady Indians finally scratched the scoreboard in the fifth when Brittany Tomlinson reached first on a bunt fumbled by the Eagles and moved to third on a base hit by Wrenn. Waugh followed with a short fly ball that Prince Edward dropped just over the left center side of the infield allowing Tomlinson to score what would be the winning run. Davis, Tomlinson, and Garrett each had a hit for Powhatan. Waugh had six assists and Summers eleven put-outs in the game. “We played a great defensive game,” offered Crump.
