Powhatan’s Varsity softball team traveled to the Battlefield District on Thursday to take on the Spotsylvania High School Knights in a non-district softball game. The Lady Indians’ offense exploded for sixteen hits and played a solid defensive effort to take an 11-0 win over the Knights. Jessica Glidewell, who was a perfect four for four with three RBI, scored Powhatan’s first run in the first inning when she crossed the plate on a single to left by Liz Sill. Kelsey Waugh and Marly Perry scored for Powhatan in the second when Glidewell delivered a double to left center. Shannon Summers singled and later scored on a hit by Katelynn Garrett for a Powhatan run in the third.

The Lady Indians stroked four consecutive hits in the fourth inning and tacked on four more runs for an 8-0 lead.

After a quiet fifth and sixth inning, the bats came alive again in the seventh as Powhatan scored three runs for the final 11-0 margin.

Freshman pitcher Jessica Brooks started on the mound for the Lady Indians and kept the Knight hitters at bay with five strike-outs while scattering three hits in six and one-third innings of work. Katelynn Garrett made her first pitching appearance of the season in the seventh and recorded a strikeout and a ground out to seal the win. Waugh had six assists for the defense and Summers had seven put-outs. Waugh, Sill and Brooks each had two hits for Powhatan, while, MacKenzie Dawson, Brittany Tomlinson, Katie Rinkewich, Summers, Perry and Garrett each contributed a hit.

The win moved the Lady Indians to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in district competition. The second round of district play begins on Tuesday with a road trip to Nottoway and a home game with Bluestone on Thursday.
