With the focus and maturity that the student body and faculty at Powhatan High School came to expect from one of their all-time great athletes, Shawn Minor has reevaluated his sports commitments at Lynchburg College. A three-sport star at Powhatan High in football, basketball (he holds the school record for points scored) and track, he was recruited by the Hornets to play basketball and run track and he did both during his freshman year. And only five foot eight, but with a tremendous vertical leap, Minor played shooting guard for the Hornets last year and average six points per game in fifteen minutes of playing time. But more amazingly, he won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in the high jump. “I just missed qualifying as an All-American by a few centimeters,” Minor said. The Hornets won their third consecutive ODAC track championship; their 25th in the school’s history. Minor also ran the hundred meter dash and anchored the 4 x 100 relay last year, but this year he will concentrate strictly on the high jump.

“I want to get my grades up this semester,” he said. “They are not bad, they just need work. They just weren’t in a place where I felt comfortable,” he said with commendable maturity. His motive is to get a firm foundation in his core classes as he pursues a degree in business. “I’ll try to do basketball again next year,” he said.. Coach Hilliary Scott supports him in his decision and will welcome him back next season. “[Coach Scott] thought it was a good idea.”

Although “we needed some help,” in his freshman basketball season, Shawn is excited about this year’s team and returning to the hardwood next year.

This young man with the thousand-watt smile and the captivating personality couldn’t be more pleased with his decision to attend this small private institution.

“I just love it here. The staff and teachers are really nice.” However, there is one thing missing in his new home. “I will really do miss football,” he confessed.
