PHS baseball bests Barons By Roslyn Ryan
May 07, 2008 If the Powhatan Indians’ Kurtis Van Ness is looking for a little extra cash, he may want to consider patenting a move he tried against the visiting Bluestone Barons last week. Facing formidable Bluestone hurler Chris Overton with Ethan Lewis on first last week, Van Ness squared around to bunt. The “bunt,” however, ended up beautifully arcing into right field for a single.

Powhatan’s Paul Nice followed up Van Ness’s single with a double rocketed into center field to score Lewis. Two batters later, Hunter Gordon hit into a fielders’ choice to score Van Ness and Nice came round to score on an error by the pitcher. Chad Byerly then laced a line drive into centerfield to score Gordon before two consecutive fly outs ended the rampage. The Barons touched pitcher Ethan Lewis for seven hits on the night, but would go down 4-2 in six and a half innings. Nice was the star on offense for the Indians, going 1-3 with a double and an RBI. Byerly was another standout, going 1-3 with an RBI. First baseman Gordon made what was easily the defensive play of the game, snagging a leadoff Barons’ rocket that surely would have been for extra bases. The Indians are now 11-3-1 overall and will take on Park View tomorrow night at home. Game time is 6 p.m. (0) Comments • Email This Article |
