PHS boys open with loss to Cosby By Sara Gray
Mar 19, 2008 The boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams from Midlothian, Cosby, Deep Run and Powhatan High Schools brought out their best for the College Showcase which kicked off all four schools’ seasons March 12-13 at the Cosby and Midlothian High School fields. On the boys’ side Midlothian went to work in the first game, earning a 1-1 tie in double overtime with Deep Run, a result they couldn’t have been happier with. In Wednesday’s second game, Cosby earned a 5-0 win over Powhatan. Senior midfielder Ben Jessee recorded a hat-trick for the Titans including two in a row to start the game. Just 6:49 into the game, Jessee sent a short, hard shot into center net and two minutes later beat all defenders down the left side. The Indians had a scare midway through the first half when starting goalie Ethan Thompson collided with an incoming Cosby player. Though down for a minute, he hobbled off the field under his own power. The play brought in Billy Tatum who had a strong night in the net. He made a few tough saves to blank the Titans for the second part of the first half and most of the second half. Though the Indians would never get on the board, they showed some strength in the midfield and on defense. Powhatan showed strong skill in Thursday’s second game but a fast midfield gave the Lady Trojans the advantage in a 3-0 win. The Lady Indians got the first shot off as Marielle Rondo sent a slow roller to Midlothian keeper Alicia Cella. Powhatan goalie Shannon Brawley made a nice save of her own shortly thereafter as Mariah Landry dodged three defenders in the box and sent a hard shot from close range on goal. Midlothian continued to pressure and found the opening they were looking for with 22:40 left in the first half. Shannon Ropelewski took a long shot from the top right corner of the penalty box and placed it in the top left corner of the goal. Gracie Tubbs also found her sweet spot with 13:20 left, taking a long shot from just outside the box that nestled perfectly under the cross bar to give the Lady Trojans a 2-0 advantage at halftime. She took nearly the same shot just 4:30 into the second half to round out scoring. Brawley made seven saves for Powhatan while Cella and Kirsten Hancock combined for four saves for Midlothian.
