PHS: Champs once again Published: June 04, 2008 By Roslyn Ryan Updated 6/5/08 Looking back on the two games that unfolded last week at Baltimore field, perhaps you would wonder if the Indians were trying to decide which kind of win is better: The nail biting, closer-than-close contest that isn’t decided until the final batter, or the all-business, take-the-lead-from-the-start and cruise to victory sort of win. Then again, when you can have both, does it really even matter? The Indians did in fact win both ways last week, taking their first contest of the week with a 1-0 win over Tabb in the regional semi-finals. Though Hunter Gordon had done a masterful job on the mound against Tabb’s ace Cody Brown, the Indians had not managed to muster much offense to support him heading into the top of the ninth inning with the score still 0-0, Powhatan’s reliever Khris Kendrick and the rest of the defense managed to stave off the Tigers after a single, an intentional walk and a passed ball put a man on second and third. Now it was Powhatan’s chance to finish things once and for all. Heading to the plate in the bottom of the ninth was Powhatan’s Boonie Hagy (see story, right), representing the tail-end of the Indians’ batting order. With two strikes, Hagy sent a fastball soaring over the centerfield fence to win the game for the Indians and secure a trip to the State quarterfinals. The game against Poquoson went just a little differently, as the Indians quickly jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after singles by Paul Nice and Hunter Gordon and a Brent Mikionis homerun. The Bull Islanders would manage three runs of their own in the second inning but the Powhatan offense would not let up, eventually scoring 14 runs on 12 hits to take their third Region I championship in a row. Nice was undoubtedly the star of the show on offense, adding a homerun, a double and a single to his already spectacular totals this season. As of Friday he was batting .554. Powhatan played host to Broad Run in the state quarterfinal game last night. Results available here. |
