PHS offense explosive against Broad Run Published: June 05, 2008 By M. Weldon Copley The Powhatan baseball team faced off against the Broad Run Spartans Tuesday night at Baltimore Field in the first round of the state tournament. Despite several rain and lightning delays, the Indians managed to put on an offensive show. Brent Mikionis started the assault with a double off the leftfield wall, followed shortly by a three-run homerun by sophomore Kurt Van Ness. The second inning was more of the same, with a two-run blast by junior Hunter Gordon, his sixth on the year, and a solo homerun by catcher Matt Hall. Defense and hustle win championships, and Powhatan showed both Tuesday. The Indians were crisp in the field and relentless in their approach to every play. The final rain delay was called at 7:45 after four and a half innings of play, enough to constitute a complete game. The final score was 12-7, Indians. |
