Pomeroy will take over BSH basketball program By Richard Carrier
May 07, 2008 Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Academy Director of Athletics, Mike Henderson has announced a change in the Knights coaching staff. Basketball Coach Andy Janto will not return to coach the hoops squad next fall. Coach Janto will continue to coach the tennis team, however. “It was not something we planned when we talked after the season,” Henderson said of the mutual decision that came out of a post season review of the basketball program. “We had a cordial conversation about how he felt about the program, his plans and desires,” Henderson offered. “In the end he decided it would be a good time to step back and reevaluate and we made the decision to make the change for the sake of change. We had no issues with Coach Janto. He is a very good man who has done a lot of good things around here for a long time.” Junior varsity Coach Ben B. Pomeroy will take the helm of the varsity. ”Again, we did not plan on this. Ben was here and had done a good job with the J.V so it seemed a logical step,” Henderson said. The 63-year-old Pomeroy played three varsity seasons with the William and Mary Indians and was twice named to the Southern Conference First Team. He still ranks as William and Mary’s 3rd all time rebounder and is a member of the William and Mary Hall of Fame. Pomeroy served as an assistant coach at his alma mater and was the Head Basketball Coach at both Menchville High School and Atlantic Christian College in the 1970’s. He left coaching to pursue a business career and semi-retired to a part time position of Guidance Councilor at BSH last year. He holds a Masters in Counseling from Old Dominion University. Coach Pomeroy admitted that he will install a more disciplined system than the fast paced offense that Coach Janto preferred. “We will be more disciplined on offense, but the biggest difference will be in my passion for defense,” he stated. ”We’ll mix things up. Practices will be more structured.” Andy Janto has over three hundred career wins on his resume, according to Director Henderson. In his four years at Blessed Sacrament he earned a reputation as “helpful and a really great guy. I’m not sure our kids appreciated that,” Henderson speculated. He came to BSH from Amelia Academy after a long stint at Saint Vincent DePaul. “He’s a legend in the V.C.C.” Henderson agreed. “I’m very happy and pleased to be given this opportunity,” Pomeroy said. “The program can use a boost, an invigoration. I may be more demanding but I feel confident in my abilities to pass along the fundamentals.” (0) Comments • Email This Article |
