The Powhatan Indians played their first district game last Friday evening at Powhatan High School, coming away with a decisive 83-46 win over the Nottoway Cougars.

The Indians had pulled ahead 22-8 by the end of the first quarter and would not relinquish the lead. The win improved the team’s record to 6-0, and showed that head coach Steve Washburn’s squad is well on track to repeat, and possibly even surpass, their electrifying 2006-2007 season.

There were some trouble spots in the Indians’ game, including noticeable difficulty at the foul line. Still, Washburn couldn’t help but be pleased at the way the team pulled it together.

“It wasn’t our best effort but we played well in spots,” offered the coach. “We definitely played better in the second quarter, when we stepped it up defensively.”

Emmett Brown, who, along with Luke Meyers and Eric Watts threatened to turn to game into a dunk-fest early on, lead the Powhatan team with 18 points, followed by Meyers and Hampton who each contributed 14.

Highlights from the contest included a crowd-pleasing dunk from Brown, during which he bounced the ball off the backboard to himself before slamming it home, and Chris Diamond’s shot at the buzzer to seal the final score.

Pointing to the numbers from his top three shooters against Nottoway, Washburn noted that the balanced scoring the team has displayed may be the best indicator of their potential as a team.

“That’s the type of balance we’ve had all season,” said Washburn. “It’s a different two or three guys every night.”

Up next for the Indians will be a tough road game against Bluestone tonight, followed by match-up with a perennially strong Greensville program at Powhatan on Friday.

“Greensville is a really good team, so that should be an exciting game,” said Washburn.

Game time for both the Bluestone and Greensville games will be 7:30 p.m.
