Sports Briefs Published: February 24, 2010 Lady Knights earn 20th win this season Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s girls varsity basketball team hosted Fuqua School last Wednesday and notched the team’s 20th victory in a 47-33 win over the Lady Falcons. Playing their third consecutive game and facing the Falcons slow-down 2-3 zone, the Lady Knights came out “kind of flat. We missed a lot of lay ups and just shot poorly,” said Coach Kristy Henderson. Up only 16-11 at the half, but the coach was not worried. “I knew that once we got rolling we would be ok and I could see our press was wearing them down.” Ashley Chaney, Austin Taylor and Tayler Anderson had four points each in the third quarter and Geena Landon and Katie Clarke both had three and the Lady Knights began to distance themselves, running out to a 36-20 margin at the end of the third period. A stiff defense and a consistent and effective fast break allowed the Lady Knights to extend the lead to 20 points early in the final period. Facing a fourth game this week, and wanting to increase the game-experience of her younger players, Coach Henderson cleared the bench. Substitutes played the majority of the final period with junior Alayna Hodges showing some legitimate progress. The five foot four inch Hodges was an effective rebounder and scored two field goals, one on an offensive rebound and put-back. “She’s really gaining confidence,“ her Coach said. |
