Sports Briefs and Scores BSH Knights golf posts two-win week Opponents: Fuqua and S. Hampton Aca.
Final Scores:
The BSH Knights Golf Team rebounded from its only loss this week to handily beat Fuqua and Southampton Academy. At Fuqua, eighth grader Josh Woodley, playing the course for the first time, had his career-best round of 41 to cinch the victory for BSH. At Stonehenge, BSH’s home course, Matt Amonette sent a signal to conference contenders for the individual crown with a blistering 3 under par 33 including four birdies and a lone bogey. Each week, one or two of the Knights have played starring roles, showing a well balanced team for 2008. BSH is now 3-1. Junior High Indians open season with win The Powhatan Jr. High Boys Baseball team began the regular season with an impressive 12-2 win over a determined and gritty Lunenberg team April 2. The Indians were victorious in their home opener led by strong pitching performances from Tyler Duty, Tanner Phillips, Luke Scherzer, and Andrew Corbit, holding the Blue Devils to one hit on the day. At the plate, the Indians were led by strong performances from Luke Scherzer going 2-4 with a double and 3 RBIs and Tyler Allen going 1-1 with 2 walks and a home run. The squad went on to defeat a young and upcoming Goochland team 6-1 on April 10. The Indians were led by a excellent pitching performance by Zach Bartlett and Cody Haislip, holding the Eagles to 4 hits while striking out 13. At the plate the Indians were led by Tyler Allen with 2 RBI and Colby Franklin going 1-1 with an RBI. Powhatan Recreation Soccer season heats up With half of the recreational soccer regular season games completed, Coaching Coordinator Rich Morgan is pleased to announce that things are going relatively smoothly so far. With over 312 players, making up 28 teams, from the U-6 age group to the U-16 age group this is by far the group’s biggest number of players and teams. Each season we are growing by approximately 40 players. It is nice to see that we are retaining players as well. Normally we see a sharper drop off after the children reach the age of 12, but now we are seeing many of them returning and we are hopeful that in the Fall we will be able to increase our number of players and teams again. The biggest obstacle this season was finding enough coaches for all of the players. Several high school and junior high students have done an outstanding job as either a Head Coach or Assistant Coach: Olivia Moore, Lucas Frick, Ellis Hopson, Kaitlin Dickey, Andy McFadden, Ethan Beard, Ethan Thompson, Tessa Barnett and Ataya Harrison. PSA is an all volunteer association and the organizers wish to thank the community for their support week after week. There are four more regular season games left as well as the Tournament. The regular season concludes on May 10 with the Recreational Tournament scheduled for May 31. Games are held Saturdays at Fighting Creek Park, and begin at 8:30 a.m. Co-Ed softball team welcoming new players The Powhatan Softball Association is seeking players and managers for the 2008 season.
