Former PHS softball player signs with Georgia Perimeter

Kelsey Waugh, a 2010 graduate of Powhatan High School and a four-year member of the PHS Varsity Softball team, has received an athletic grant-in-aid for softball at Georgia Perimeter College in Covington, Georgia.

Waugh was named to the Southside All-District and Region 1 teams, and received All-State Honorable Mention this past season, helping the Lady Indians capture the Region 1 championship and advance to the Group AA State Semi-Finals.

She played travel softball for the Richmond Storm, the 2010 Pony Nationals 18U champions.

“Kelsey has the softball skills, experience and athleticism to become an impact player at Georgia Perimeter”, said PHS coach Marie Crump. “She has the versatility to play in the middle infield or outfield, and contribute offensively as a hitter, or short game specialist.

“Georgia Perimeter has provided a great opportunity to continue her education and participate in a strong softball program with excellent facilities.”

The Jaguars, coached by Richmond native Ed Schutte, won the 2010 NJCAA Region 17 Championship and advanced to the NJCAA national championships in 2007 and again this past season.

The college is a part of the University System of Georgia.

Powhatan golf’s Matt Johnston takes medalist honors

In an early-season scramble to see who wants to take over first place in Southside District Golf, the Powhatan Indians hosted the remaining six teams at Mill Quarter last Thursday.

The Indians’ Matt Johnston toured the 18 hole, par 72, 6,548 yard course in 75 shots to take over-all medalist honors. This was the second consecutive over-all medalist win for Johnston, but the rest of the PHS golfers did not fare as well and the Indians fell to second place with a team total of 328.

Park View took its first match win of the season with a 325 score and Bluestone, a previous match winner, fell to third place with a 330 total. All three teams have now won a match, but technically, and by virtue of head-to-head wins, the Indians lead the District. Powhatan has compiled a 16-2 individual win total, Bluestone 15-3 and Park View 14-4.

Sophomore Trey Barden’s 82 earned him second place on Powhatan’s scoring list and sophomore Brandon Herring was close behind with an 84. Senior Dillon Harding’s round of 87completed the Indians’ aggregate of 328. Freshman Nick Furbee shot an 89 and junior Tim Britton’s 93 “was very much an aberration,” according to Coach Perry.

Tuesday’s Southside district golf match at Clarkesville’s Kinderton Country Club did prove one thing for the Powhatan team: Capturing the District title is going to be a dog fight.

The Indians forged another second place finish, this time to Bluestone, and came out of the match deadlocked with the Barons with a 21-3 over-all head-to-head match record.

Senior Matt Johnston toured the tough par 71, 6,108 yard lay-out in 79 strokes to win co-medalist honors. Sophomore Brandon Herring led the remaining three tightly bunched PHS scorers with an 83.

Sophomore Trey Barden followed with an 84 and senior Dillon Harding put the last points in the scorebook for the Indians with an 85.

Bluestone’s first place stroke aggregate for the match was 329. Powhatan’s 331 total left the Indians linksters frustrated- they’ve lost consecutive matches by three strokes or less. “Everyone agreed they could have shaved a stroke or two off of their scores,” Coach Greg Perry said. “I agreed with them.”

An unexpected bright spot was the performance of Thomas Windbiel. Playing in his first high school match, the Powhatan freshman shot a steady 91.

Junior Tim Britton continued to struggle, posting his second consecutive 93.
