The ones to watch in high school hoops action Published: January 20, 2010 By Richard Carrier Coming out of the holiday break, this has been a loaded 10 days of basketball action in the county. I got a chance to see a few of the varsity squads go up against some pretty good competition in holiday tournaments (they compiled an unimpressive 1-5 record) but I really bore down this past week-plus and crammed in every game I could. Besides the fact it is still fairly early in division and conference play, I’m smart enough not to make any predictions as to how the season will ultimately shake out for the eight teams I’m covering. In all but one case, however, I’ve seen enough of each team to be able to call your attention to the emerging kids you’ll find both interesting and exciting to keep an eye on. Unfortunately, for Powhatan’s boys varsity, there is only one name: Shawn Minor. End of story. I don’t know whether his surrounding cast is just unmotivated, but I certainly shouldn’t and won’t ask Coach Washburn his take on the consistent lack of offensive support for the Southside District’s best player. PHS’s boys junior varsity squad produces, truly, a horse of a different color. The kid to watch — and thoroughly enjoy — is Chris Deleon. A stone cold killer from long-distance with his flat-footed sling shot, this kid can also handle the ball well and get to the rim to score. His power drive kind of looks like he’s slowly making his way through a mine field, but his technique is strangely effective. He also has players around him who compliment his skill set. Powhatan High School’s girls varsity has a deep cast of effective contributors, but maximum effect from an emerging player, she’s only a sophomore, has to be hung on Hannah Livermon. The Indians’ girls junior varsity team is very similar to its older counterpart at PHS, very deep with a variety of very productive girls at most positions. Like the varsity girls, its not a team that allows you to win by shutting down one player. But if that is the game plan you insist on employing, double team or throw a box-and-one on Laura Ramthum. This fragile looking child; she reminds me of last year’s Cady Shelton, just taller, is flat-out smooth taking and, mostly making, her mulit-range set shot or capturing rebounds over taller opponents. She appears to be almost effortless. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Academy has not had a legitimate post player in a half-dozen years, but the boys varsity is rapidly building one. At only 6’3”, Sophomore Ethan Sill is already a fearsome rebounder for the normally undersized Knights. His double digit rebounds would have solidified his starting spot, but he is also developing several post moves which have elevated him to a consistent top three scorer on his team. And he is tough. BSH’s boys junior varsity squad is, most assuredly, a work in progress. Sometimes they look like Keystone Kops and sometimes a well oiled machine. But the one constant is burley sophomore Brian Clarke. With the body of a defensive lineman, Clarke has the shooting touch of an assassin. The three pointer is his specialty, despite the fact that his foot speed is that of a defensive lineman. The incubating star for the Blessed Sacrament Lady Knights is freshman Katie Clarke who, I just realized, is the younger sister of Brian. Coach Kristy Henderson will tell anyone that an offensively skilled post player is the hardest thing to develop in the ladies’ game. Katie is a surprisingly physical player with good rebounding skills and she can run the floor. Those elusive post scoring skills, not just sticking back rebounds, but making definitive moves within an offense to score in the paint are beginning to emerge. And she’s only a freshman. I’m leaving out the Blessed Sacrament junior varsity girls on purpose. I’ve only seen them play one time and that was neither a win nor a complete game. As a team, they played hard and showed great enthusiasm for the game. Knowing very well the BSH Athletic Department’s commitment to advancing the basketball program, look for at least a couple of the JV girls to pop up as recognized contenders soon. |

I totally agree with the abovementioned comments. Shawn Minor is an excellent athlete by all means but his lack of leadership, demeaning behavior towards other teammates and failure to be a good example to others that follow him diminishes his favor and praise in my book. (I’ve seen him in action) I know he is PHS’s “golden child” but there WILL be others behind him that will be as good or maybe better than he is. The coaches need to spend time mentoring these kids on their attitudes, BIG egos and how to treat their teammates on & off the field/court. It would serve them better as they enters college and moves forward in their lives. There is more to a team than one person, even if that person happens to be Shawn Minor. GLS25

It’s obvious that Carrier does not watch or support youth athletics in our region. He is only positive about a team or a sport when they support a winning record; otherwise he believes they are wasting everyones time. Don’t expect him to watch the games or understand them just because he is in attendance. He apparently reports from third party conversations and a copy of the stat sheet. They should pay Greg Taylor a little more and have him cover local sports - at least it would balanced. A Grandmother at PHS of Powhatan, VA

Mr. Carrier, I was disappointed with your recent article about the PHS Boys basketball team. Sure, Shawn Minor is a great player and deserves all the credit he is due, however there are others on the team that have different talents that allow those who are excellent shooters to add to the score like good at defense, good at handling the ball and passing to the right person. The whole team deserves praise for their individual talents that they contribute to make the successful team that they are. PHS Parent

Mr. Carrier… Next basketball game scheduled in Powhatan I wish to see ONLY Shawn Minor on the court, Then praise how he is the “ONLY” one..See how many points he can score on his own WITHOUT the team..I am not saying that Shawn Minor isn’t a excellent player because he is, but come on give the WHOLE team credit…They are all excellent players, and play as a team..Shawn wouldn’t be able to do it without the help of his TEAMMATES..Please next time be more positive for the players…Give credit to the whole team.. WOW, MR. CARRIER, I THOUGHT YOU WERE WATCHING THESE GAMES WHEN I SEE YOU SITTING IN THE STANDS. YOU MUST HAVE BEEN SPENDING YOUR TIME WRITING THOSE SILLY ARTICLES ABOUT A ONE MAN BASKETBALL TEAM. IF YOU LOOK AT THE GUYS ON THE SIDELINE, THEY’RE ON THE TEAM, TOO. THERE ARE 12 OF THEM ON THE TEAM. THEY ALL PRACTICE EVERY DAY DURING THE WEEK AND ON SATURDAY AND EVEN OVER CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS. HOW ABOUT A LITTLE ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THESE KIDS, WHO ALL WORK VERY HARD EACH DAY TO IMPROVE THIER SKILLS, INSTEAD OF ACTING LIKE THEY DON’T EXIST. YES, SHAWN MINOR IS PROBABLY THE BEST ATHLETE I’VE EVER SEEN AT PHS, BUT YOU SAID YOURSELF THAT WE MAY NEVER SEE ANOTHER ONE LIKE HIM IN OUR LIFETIME. SO, WHY DO YOU THINK THAT THE REST OF THE PLAYERS ARE FAILING IF THEY DON’T MATCH SHAWN’S PERFORMANCE? GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE. THE PLAYERS ON THIS TEAM ARE AS TALENTED AS ANY IN THE SOUTHSIDE DISTRICT. IT TAKES TIME FOR A TEAM TO PLAY WELL TOGETHER AND THESE KIDS ARE SHOWING SIGNS THAT THINGS ARE GETTING BETTER WITH EACH GAME. TAKE A LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE AND GIVE SOME ENCOURAGEMENT FOR A CHANGE. Last time I checked, there are 11 other players besides Shawn on the roster. Shawn is a great player but he is not the TEAM. There are 4 other guys on the court with him. I am pretty sure that last game Watson Fralin had 18 and Prilliman had around 10. Everybody on the team has a role…..Also, they are 5-2 in the district in tied for 2nd place, that is some “miracle” now isnt it? Try writing something POSITIVE in your article about them sometime!!! If i’m not mistaking, there’s an offense AND a deffense on every single basketball team…basketball is not just about making the baskets, without defense and people guarding for shawn minor, he wouldn’t have the opportunity to make those shots. Although Shawn is the lead scorer, every single person makes a difference on that team not only in the games but in practice as well. Those boys have worked hard all summer and all season to increase in their game. Every single one of those boys has motivation to win those games. You do not know how the boys work in practice and how they encourage their teammates to play at their best. Maybe you should clean your glasses and pay closer attention to the encouragement the boys not only on the court, but on the bench as well, have for each other. They’re a team, and unlike many of the teams we play, Powhatan boys are respectful to every team we play and they encourage each other to do their best and never give up. THAT is a team, not the amount of points one player scores more than another. Linda

I would like to comment about the no chance for a winning record…I do believe Powhatan is one win away from not only a 6-6 record (all of the losses coming from great teams…including 3 AAA schools) but second place out of the hardest AA District for basketball. Another thing. Their district record is 5-2. Thats what really matters in the end to me sounds like a winning record. END OF STORY. Submit Your Comments Below |
