Indians claim first district victory

Chris Deleon has virtually limitless range on his jump shot, but as the Powhatan High boys basketball team went through its warmups prior to Friday’s game against Louisa, Deleon’s shot was misfiring more often than not.

Even though the ball didn’t feel right coming off his fingers, the confident Deleon still told teammate Tyler Allen he was about to have a big game.

The talented junior made good on his prediction by pouring in a career-high 33 points, helping the Indians claim their first-ever Jefferson District victory with a 68-51 win.

Sophomore Drew Ratliff scored 12 points and freshman Joey Balcom added 10 for Powhatan (4-11 overall, 1-6 district), which… Read more...

Another frustrating near-miss for BSH

With three seconds remaining in Friday’s game against Richmond Christian, the ball somehow ended up in the hands of Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Thomas Murphy in the far left corner.

The junior sharpshooter squeezed off a 3-pointer that would’ve tied the game, but his effort caromed off of the back rim and the Knights went down to another agonizing defeat, 47-44.

Friday’s contest followed a familiar script – an early lead, foul problems magnified by a short bench, difficulty preventing penetration by opposing guards, and one or more offensive weapons negated –for the Knights, who have been much more competitive than their 1-13 overall record indicates.

Knights’ early lead vanishes in loss to Raiders

The Blessed Sacrament Huguenot girls basketball squad took the floor last Monday as if they intended to run the visiting Southampton Raiders out of the gym.

Katie Clarke opened the scoring off an assist from Geena Landon. Taylor Thompson dropped in a jumper, Corrine Birriel’s steal led to a Landon basket and Clarke bombed a three from the corner as the Knights built a quick 9-0 lead.

But the Raiders, who entered the Virginia Commonwealth Conference game with an impressive 9-2 record, answered with a 12-0 run of their own.

Clarke’s free throw and power move to the basket produced a 12-all tie at the end of first quarter.

Indians’ effort earns respect in defeat

On paper, Friday’s Powhatan-Western Albemarle boys basketball game appeared to be a classic mismatch.

The visiting Warriors came to town with 10 victories and a 3-1 Jefferson District mark, which included a nine-point win over the same Charlottesville squad that had pummeled Powhatan on Tuesday.

The Indians, who have a roster full of inexperienced players learning on the fly, had lost their first four district games as part of a 3-9 overall record.

But after Western Albemarle raced out to a 7-0 lead, something interesting happened: Powhatan’s players hit a couple shots, gained confidence and started to believe they could stand toe-to-toe with the bigger, deeper… Read more...

Streaking Knights slam Steward

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s girls basketball game against Steward last Thursday was a microcosm of the Knights’ season to date.

BSH started slowly, leading the host Saints by just three points after the first quarter, but dominated the remainder of the contest and rolled to a 46-24 Virginia Commonwealth Conference victory.

It was the Knights’ sixth win in their last seven games. After an 0-3 start that included lopsided losses to Southampton Academy (50-27) and Amelia Academy (70-31), BSH heads into tomorrow’s home game against Tidewater Academy with a 6-4 record and the confidence that things are coming together nicely under first-year coach Sally Lewis.

PHS wins rematch against Goochland

For the second time in seven days, Goochland and Powhatan squared off on the basketball court. Monday night, it was Goochland’s turn to host but Powhatan’s turn to win as the Indians left town with a 70-57 victory.

The Bulldogs snatched an early lead, but once the Indians drew even at six they never looked back. Powhatan’s aggressive play on the boards and a young undersized backcourt shredded the usually stingy Bulldog defense to lead by as much as 19 points.

“That was probably the best game we’ve played all season; the most complete effort,” said Powhatan coach Steve Washburn.

Powhatan’s leading scorer, Chris Deleon, notched only… Read more...

Making an impact

For some basketball coaches, the game is about X’s and O’s, drawing up the perfect play to create a strategic advantage while moving players around like life-size chess pieces on a 94-foot board.

For James Johnson, it’s always been about relationships.

The Powhatan High graduate, a self-described “people person,” didn’t pursue a career in coaching because of the money or the glamour or the fame. He wasn’t primarily motivated by a desire to compete in the game’s cathedrals or test his tactical expertise against basketball savants such as Duke’s famed Coach K.

Minor continues to impress
Published: Jan 04, 2012

With the focus and maturity that the student body and faculty at Powhatan High School came to expect from one of their all-time great athletes, Shawn Minor has reevaluated his sports commitments at Lynchburg College. A three-sport star at Powhatan High in football, basketball (he holds the school record for points scored) and track, he was recruited by the Hornets to play basketball and run track and he did both during his freshman year. And only five foot eight, but with a tremendous vertical leap, Minor played shooting guard for the Hornets last year and average six points per game in fifteen minutes of playing time. But more amazingly, he won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship… Read more...

Lady Knights’ short staffing hurts against Covenant Eagles
Published: Jan 04, 2012

It was not for lack of heart, effort or tenacity that the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot girls basketball team did not prevail in their opening-round game of the Covenant Christmas Classic last Wednesday. The Lady Knights took the floor with only six varsity players, while facing a full squad of very talented Lady Eagles.

Relying on a tenacious defense and dictating the tempo of the game, Blessed Sacrament kept their hosts in a half-court offense and took a 9 to 7 lead on Geena Landon’s three-pointer at the end of the first quarter. Katie Clark’s jumper, Corrine Birriel’s short jump-shot and baseline drive, followed by another three pointer from Landon, saw the Lady Knights… Read more...

Knights fall to Covenant in Christmas Classic
Published: Jan 04, 2012

By Richard Carrier
Contributing Writer

For Blessed Sacrament Huguenots boys basketball team to come away with a first-round victory in the 10th Annual Covenant Christmas Classic the under-manned Knights would have to control tempo, strike early and stay out of foul trouble against the host squad. With only seven players suited up last Thursday evening, Blessed Sacrament faced a 15 man Eagles roster loaded with speed. Covenant started a four guard -offense and a starting center under 6’3” and, for a rare instance this year, the Knights started slightly superior size. However, Covenant’s back-up 6’7” center would start a scoring surge that would change the complexion of the game.
