Knights pummel Warriors in opening match

The Blessed Sacrament Huguenot boys tennis team opened the season with a thorough 8-1 thumping of the visiting Tidewater Academy squad.

The Knights took no prisoners as they rolled through the first five matches and then gave some of the youngsters the chance to get some experience in the final two singles matches, as well as the last doubles match.

Playing at number one singles, senior Brian Clarke lost only one game, starting off the team’s 8-1 match- win with an 8-1 victory of his own. Junior Robbie Baxter did Clarke one better, taking his number two singles match with a 8-0 whitewash.

Senior Ben Bowles kept almost all the points on the Knight’s side of the scorebook,… Read more...

For Baltimore, it’s 45 years and counting

It’s become an annual rite of spring for Powhatan High’s baseball team.

Every winter, as the frigid Virginia air accentuates the ache in his joints, Bob Baltimore tries to convince himself that this is the year he finally gives up coaching for good.

But when the weather turns warmer and the Indians gather for their first preseason workout on the manicured diamond that bears his family name, nobody is surprised to see the man they all know as “Coach B” back out at practice and ready to contribute any way he can.

“He can’t stay away,” PHS senior Bobby Oglesby said after a recent practice. “He loves it so much, he’ll be out… Read more...

Benedictine offense too strong for BSH

During his tenure as baseball coach at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, James Poore has frequently scheduled games against opponents with much larger student bodies – and much larger talent pools – from which to choose their teams.

There’s a method to Poore’s apparent “madness.” He knows that by putting his players on the diamond opposite larger public- and private-school teams, they gain experience that can prove valuable when the calendar turns to June and the Knights are pursuing a state championship.

But out of necessity, BSH’s 2012 schedule is even more demanding than usual. Because Steward opted not to play baseball in the Virginia Commonwealth… Read more...

Powhatan softball rebounds from opening loss

It’s only a week into the 2012 high school softball season, and already Powhatan has had to deal with its share of adversity.

First, the Indians lost their ace pitcher, senior Rachael Walters, to a knee injury prior to their season opener against Goochland.

Then they committed three costly defensive miscues behind Walters’ replacement, senior Hannah Marshall, and gave up five runs in the third inning of a 6-1 loss to the Bulldogs.

But Powhatan bounced back from that defeat in dominant fashion, pounding out 14 hits and scoring 11 runs in its first four at-bats en route to a 12-3 victory over James River.

“Obviously we made some uncharacteristic errors”… Read more...

New-look Indians drop opener

The Powhatan High baseball team that took the field for last Thursday’s season opener against Midlothian bore little resemblance to the squad that dropped a heartbreaker to York in the Region I semifinals last spring.

With new starters at six of nine positions, you’d need a program to identify these Indians.

So while he certainly was less than pleased with certain aspects of his team’s 10-8 loss, PHS coach Gregg Conner has been around long enough to know that growing pains usually are part of the deal.

“We’re a work in progress,” Conner said. “We’re filling a lot of holes in our lineup and we’re looking for the right pieces… Read more...

Talented Knights have high hopes

Coming off a stellar season that saw his Knights play in the Virginia Independent School state championship game, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot baseball coach James Poore has every reason to be optimistic about the upcoming season.

With all-state first baseman T.J. Dobrucky slugging from the cleanup spot, first team all-conference pitcher Nathaniel Settle returning to the mound and second team all-conference hurler Stephen Bendle also back in the pitching rotation, as well as a deep roster with generous varsity experience, the 2012 BSH squad has high expectations.

Going around the infield, sophomore David Prince, who was brought up from the JV squad last year, will man second base. Bendele,… Read more...

PHS softball takes nothing for granted

Powhatan High returns 10 players from the softball team that won the Region I championship last spring before falling 4-0 to eventual state champion Briar Woods in the Group AA state quarterfinals.

Veteran coach Marie Crump acknowledged that the loss, during which the Indians managed only two hits against diminutive Falcons ace Macy Jones, “adds incentive” for the players who have come back for another shot at Powhatan’s sixth state title.

At the same time, Crump cautions against looking at the experience on the 2012 roster and assuming the Indians will make it back to the state tournament during their first season as members of the Jefferson District.

For Mikionis, absence made heart grow fonder

Baseball was such an integral part of Brent Mikionis’ life, he didn’t know what to do with himself when an injury made him a spectator for the better part of the 2011 season.

The Powhatan High alum had high hopes for his junior campaign at VCU after leading the Rams to the NCAA tournament with a team-high 11 home runs and 54 RBIs as a sophomore.

But all was not right with one of the 6-5, 230-pound first baseman’s broad shoulders.

After dealing with discomfort throughout the offseason, Mikionis had an MRI and was diagnosed with a torn labrum in his right (throwing) shoulder. He was cleared to continue playing as long as he could handle the pain.

It didn’t… Read more...

Bowers makes history on mat

The third time was a charm for Dave Bowers.

Bowers, a Powhatan High senior, secured his third berth in the Group AA state wrestling tournament with a top-four finish in his weight class at the Region II championships.

But by placing fourth in the region, Bowers assured himself the toughest possible road through the 132-pound bracket last weekend in Salem.

In his opening match at states, Bowers faced Region I champion Trey Gregory of New Kent. Powhatan coach Lee Richardson didn’t mince words as he reminded Bowers that Gregory beat him twice last season.

“I asked him, ‘Aren’t you tired of losing to Trey Gregory?’” Richardson recalled.… Read more...

Clarke does it all for Knights

Katie Clarke was 5 years old when she played organized basketball for the first time.

It wasn’t exactly love at first dribble.

“I ran off the court crying and said ‘I don’t want to play,’” Clarke recalled.

Fortunately for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s girls basketball program, that didn’t last long. Clarke started playing after school with a neighbor, scored her first basket in a game and soon found herself hooked on the sport.

After countless pickup games with her father, brothers and friends, she eventually grew into one of the best players in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference.

Clarke, a 5-9 junior, does everything… Read more...
