Powhatan team holds on to take
66-62 win over Southside foe Greensville County

Powhatan High School’s basketball team faced its first significant Southside District challenge last Friday night when Greensville County came to visit.

The Indians led by four to six points throughout most of the game but the real test came when they fell behind late in the final quarter. Taron Hampton’s three tied the game with less than two minutes left but it was Emmett Brown’s amazing baseline drive that sealed the 66-62 win for Powhatan.

“I’ve watched the films three times and I don’t know how he did it,” said head coach Steve… Read more...

Williamsburg Christian brought a solid basketball team to Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Monday night. The 11-7 Eagles athletic pivot man, Manny Hill, victimized the Knights for 26 points and their reed-thin guard, Will Mausteller, bombed in 16 more in their 53-42 win over BSH.

The 2-11 Knights unveiled a previously hidden long-range offense, canning six three-pointers.

“We probably haven’t made eight threes all season long,” stated coach Andy Janto. Sophomore Connor Paul led the Knights with 13 points including half of the three-point shots. But it was what the Knights didn’t do and couldn’t find late in the game that allowed this one to get away.

Richard Carrier’s Extra Points

Richard Carrier “Why I needed a fast break” Beloved wife Pat and I are going to take a little time off. The good news is, for some of you, it will be just a few days. The bad news is, for some of you, it will be just a few days. I was trying to figure out the other day just how long it has been since I had been on any kind of vacation and my best remembering was a trip to Jamaica some years back. At first I was confused as to exactly when that was. The year ‘94 stuck in my not-so-nimble brain, but I couldn’t pin it down to 1894 or 1994.… Read more...

The Powhatan Indians played their first district game last Friday evening at Powhatan High School, coming away with a decisive 83-46 win over the Nottoway Cougars.

The Indians had pulled ahead 22-8 by the end of the first quarter and would not relinquish the lead. The win improved the team’s record to 6-0, and showed that head coach Steve Washburn’s squad is well on track to repeat, and possibly even surpass, their electrifying 2006-2007 season.

There were some trouble spots in the Indians’ game, including noticeable difficulty at the foul line. Still, Washburn couldn’t help but be pleased at the way the team pulled it together.

If Powhatan baseball fans listening to sports radio station WRNL on the afternoon of Dec. 28 wondered why the new voice they were hearing sounded familiar, it is time to solve the mystery.

The voice belonged to Powhatan High School baseball player Chad Byerly, who joined host Wes McElroy during McElroy’s afternoon show The Final Round.

Byerly was given an hour of air time courtesy of his father Mike, who bid on the opportunity at a silent auction for the Kidney Foundation of the Virginias. And while Chad insisted he wasn’t nervous before going on the air, he admitted the fact that he was talking about sports—something near and dear to his heart—made it much… Read more...

After a rocky start to the season, the Powhatan girls basketball team appears to be back on track.

The team opened the season with losses to Goochland, Matoaca and Louisa, but snapped the streak with a 35-34 win over Monticello on Dec. 12. On Jan. 3, the girls traveled to Nottoway, where they defeated the Lady Cougars 46-39

Powhatan lead Nottoway for the first two quarters, ending the first half at 25-15. And while Nottoway rallied to pull within seven by the close of the fourth quarter, the Lady Indians’ improved defense held them off.

Erin Lonon lead the Powhatan team with 14 points, followed by Ataya Harrison with 12.

According to head coach Paulette Bowman,… Read more...

Not surprisingly, it is impossible to slide, push or even pound Christy Henderson into a niche. The multi-faceted Blessed Sacrament Huguenot girl’s basketball coach is also the school’s assistant athletic director, Physical Education instructor, the mother of three very young children and the wife of the Knights’ head football coach, athletic director and math instructor, Mike Henderson.

But accept the one fact that she has chiseled into the granite of her psyche and it is then possible to peel back the layers of her personality and begin to understand what makes Christy Henderson tick. Every thing in her life starts and ends with Katie, Faith, Matt and Mike.

The Blessed Sacrament girl’s basketball team continued their early season struggles in the opening round game of the Covenant Christmas Classic invitational tournament last Friday evening. The Lady Knights, still trying to define their offensive personality and nail down a go-to scorer, fell to the Lady Eagles 42-31.

Junior center Ellen Smethurst proved to be the major contributor to the Covenant win, scoring a game-high 15 points. The six- footer was also responsible for exposing BSH’s questionable interior defense and was primarily responsible for three of the Knight’s starters fouling out of the contest.

“We played a good first half. No we played a great… Read more...
